Description

hand painted old looks illuminated manuscript on goatskin parchment
The Grimani Breviary
The Ghent-Bruget Flemish illuminated manuscript School

This miniature is hand painted high quality reproduction of illuminated manuscript leaf of The Grimani Breviary, 15th century illuminated manuscript of created in The Ghent-Brugg School

The original Grimani Breviary, long in the library of San Marco and the Biblioteca Marciana, Venice, is a key work in the late history of Flemish illuminated manuscripts. It was produced in Ghent and Bruges ca 1515-1520 and by 1520 owned, though possibly not originally commissioned, by Cardinal Domenico Grimani. Several leading artists, including Simon Bening, the Master of James IV of Scotland and Gerard David, contributed some of their finest work to it.

The Ghent-Brugg School, a group of manuscript illustrators and scribes that operated during the last quarter of the 15th and first half of the 16th centuries, mainly in the Flemish cities of Ghent and Bruges. The Ghent-Bruget School produced luxurious manuscripts that were willingly sought by church and secular princes in many parts of Europe. The masterpiece of the group is the Griman Breviary. Illuminated mainly by Gerard Horenbut and Simon Bening, the Breviary calendar is an update to the calendar from Très riches heures du duc de Berry (Conde Museum, Chantilly, French), which was made a century earlier
