Description

Catalogus archiepiscoporum gnesnensium
Catalogue of archbishops of Gniezno

This miniature is hand painted high quality reproduction of illuminated manuscript leaf of Catalogus archiepiscoporum gnesnensium by Jan Długosz

Story:

The catalog was created on the basis of data collected by Długosz during the work on his Annals, and probably also on the basis of fragments of earlier catalogs, not preserved for the present day. One of his collaborators, and perhaps also co-author of some biographies, was Sędziwoj z Czechla. The original autograph of Długosz’s work, written between 1460 and 1472, has not survived. A copy survived, almost contemporary to the autograph.

Decades after the author’s death, Bishop Piotr Tomicki of Cracow commissioned Stanisław Samostrzelnik to illuminate the first two catalogs, including the bishops of the dioceses of Gniezno and Kraków. Between 1530 and 1535, an edition of the catalog was created in the Gunner’s workshop with dozens of miniatures depicting the bishops described in the work, scenes from the New Testament and patrons of some of the described dignitaries. Due to Tomicki’s death in 1535, some miniatures were not completed, and the codex became the property of his nephew, Primate Andrzej Krzycki. Another owner, Chancellor Jan Zamoyski, donated the manuscript to the library of the Zamość Academy. At the beginning of the 19th century, together with its collections, it was incorporated into the Library of the Zamość Ordinance
