Description

The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry –
Meeting of the Magi

This miniature is hand painted high quality Fine Art reproduction of illuminated manuscript leaf of the The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry.

Story: This miniature, included in the binding of the manuscript in the Hours of the Virgin. A relatively new plot in European fine art is taken from The Legend of the Three Holy Magi (1364-1375) by John of Hildesheim. Each of the Magi leads his own procession: three groups of horsemen meet at the pavilion (edicules or montjoye), over which the Star of Bethlehem shines

The Magi in this case represent not three different continents, as mentioned in the Golden Legend, but three ages of man. Caspar, the youngest (top right group), is accompanied by two dark-skinned characters, as traditionally represented in Italian iconography. Balthasar (left) and Melchior (right), respectively, are middle-aged and elderly people. The latter is crowned with the same headdress as the emperor Augustus, presented in another miniature of the Magnificent Book of Hours. Luxurious suites of kings are complemented by images of wild animals, among which there is a bear – the symbol of the Duke of Berry.
