500 YEARS OF HELIOCENTRIC THEORY
Nicolaus Copernicus first formulated in written his heliocentric theory not earlier than in 1509 and announced it not later than in 1514.
Copernicus presented his ideas in a 19-page manuscript Nicolai Copernici de hipothesibus motuum coelestium a se constitutis commentariolus, also known as Commentariolus (Little Commentary). Today such information would be published in a renowned scientific magazine so that the priority of the discovery could be determined and to feedback from other scientists received. Yet, five hundred years ago Copernicus had to be cautious, thus he printed only a dozen or so copies of the manuscript and sent them to the most renowned scientists of his time. The reason was that the Little Commentary presented seven basic assumptions, the first two of which invalidated the existing theory stating that the Earth was the centre of the universe:
“There is no one centre of all the celestial circles or spheres”.
(“Omnium orbium caelestium sive sphaerarum unum centrum non esse”.)
“The centre of the earth is not the centre of the universe, but only of gravity and of the moon’s orbit”. (“Centrum terrae non esse centrum mundi, sed tantum gravitatis et orbis Lunaris”.)
Therefore we can say that it is the Commentariolus that started the Copernican Revolution in astronomy around 500 years ago, as well as a revolution regarding the comprehension of the world.
